3.5” Floppy Disks

This project started years ago with a gallery exhibition entitled Collections at the Chicago Urban Art Society in 2011, and built on an idea that there must have been billions of these things made during the peak of their use (80’s, 90’s & into the 2000’s) and that their obsolescence would turn them all into landfill. The thought of turning something useless and overlooked into something beautiful and desirable provides some excellent foundational contrast. The modularity and inherent constraints (color, size, availability) of this medium are a nice framework to build from as well, and really guide the final output. Each piece consists of thousands of disks and can often weigh several hundred pounds.
